ANTELOPE AYSO REGION 884 U6 Coaching Guidelines Under 6 age group (4 to 5) is usually a child's first introduction to team sports. The purpose of team sports is to develop different individual skills in a cooperative framework with the elusive concept called SPORTSMANSHIP. This can be a strange time as the participants of this age group are emerging from the stage of playing "near" each other to actually playing "with" others (usually one at a time). This maturity level is one of the reasons competitive play is strongly discouraged with Under 6. Teams are not balanced by ability, as no player history exists and team capabilities will vary from week to week because of illness, interest and irregular attendance (depending on birthday party schedules). Parents should not measure their child's success by goals scored but by skill improvement, expanded abilities and having FUN in a recreational activity. While wishing success for our children, we should NOT emphasize winning, but encourage players to participate, promote sportsmanship, teamwork and learning. Practices No midweek practice during the season. Time should be available before each game for practicing with both teams sharing the field. Saturday practices in August (before the regurlarly-scheduled games) can be used to let the players play a few games and for you to evaluate their individual abilities. All the team members are to participate. Each team will use half the game field for practice times. Coaching/Cheering Side line cheering is encouraged but sideline coaching is strongly discouraged, as confusion and anxiety are the most likely results. Example: Cheering: Good play! Coaching: Pass the ball. Nice try! Move forward Congratulations on coaching your new team. Good luck, and thank you for volunteering! |
